LOS ANGELES, California – Repeat drunk driver Jorge Alberto Molina, 29, was sentenced to 33 years to life in prison for the deaths of a married couple Kelvin and Demetria Dorsey resulting when he crashed into them on New Year’s Eve 2010, according to a press release by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
At a jury trial held in January, Molina was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder as well as leaving the scene of a car accident. The murder conviction stems from the fact that Molina had a prior DUI conviction on his record, said Attorney West Seegmiller, founder of The Seegmiller Law Firm.
“This man was not only a repeat drunk driver, but he was a coward who left the scene of a fatal car accident that he caused while he was speeding and ran a red light,” Seegmiller said. “Police found a bottle of vodka in his car and he admitted he drank a bottle of tequila and six beers before getting behind the wheel that night.”
Molina, a Culver City resident, apologized to the family of the victims prior to sentencing in Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday morning, the report said. The couple was parents of five children ages 17 to 28 years old. According to police, Molina had a .21 percent blood alcohol level when he was arrested on Dec. 31, 2010, following a brief high-speed police chase.
Molina ran a red light near Florence Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard about 11:30 p.m. and crashed into the couple’s blue Infinity causing it to flip onto its roof and killing them. After the crash, Molina attempted to flee the scene of the fatal crash, but police officers were able to catch and arrest him.
“He had such a disregard for life,” said Deputy District Attorney Kennes Ma. “He was traveling at speeds ranging from 55 to 100 mph before he crashed into their car.”
