GARDEN GROVE, California – Brian Winfrey, 47 of Laguna Hills died Monday night after a driver in a white Honda CRV car crashed into his bicycle just before 7 p.m. on Euclid Street near Wakefield Avenue, according to a press release issued by the Orange County Sheriff Coroner Department.
Winfrey was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment of his injuries, but he died about an hour after the crash at 8 p.m., the report said.
According to a report in the Orange County Register, Winfrey was wearing a yellow reflector vest at the time he was struck by the vehicle driven by a 48-year-old woman. The woman was questioned by police, but released without being cited or arrested, the Register reported.
The Garden Grove Police Department is investigating the crash to determine liability.
Witnesses are asked to call Garden Grove police at 714-741-5823.
“Drivers who injured or kill a bicyclist can be held liable to the victim for medical or funeral costs, loss of earnings and loss of companionship in the case of a wrongful death,” said Attorney West Seegmiller. “Indeed, financial compensation for someone killed in a crash can help support a family struggling to make ends meet in the wake of an unexpected death.”
